Highlights

Whaler’s Base

Between 1923 and 1933 the Ross Sea Whaling Company of Sandefjord, Norway made nine expeditions to the Ross Sea in Antarctica while using a base in Paterson Inlet. Today it is called ‘The Whaler’s Base’. The purpose of the facility was to repair the whale chasers in between the November to February whaling seasons. Explore the relics still to be seen at the base including the old rusty workshop boiler on the beach and the foundations of the slipway.

Fishing

Fishing has been a part of the life on Stewart Island from the days of the earliest Maori occupation. For the visitor wishing to experience some of New Zealand’s best fishing and to catch a famous Stewart Island Blue Cod for dinner, we provide quality gear including rods, reels and bait. Your professional crew will also assist with fishing technique and rig lines. Anyone from beginners to experienced fisher-people are welcome on this tour. Guaranteed fun for everyone!

Ulva Island

The Ulva Island open sanctuary is one of only a few predator-free sanctuaries for native plants and rare and endangered birds in New Zealand. Since the eradication of rats in 1997, the Island’s birdlife has flourished and several bird species have been released including the rare South Island Saddleback (Tieke) (pictured), Rifleman (Titipounamu), South Island Robin (Toutouwai), Yellowhead (Mohua) and the Southern Island Brown Kiwi or Tokoeka. An absolute must for bird lovers, we provide an Ulva Island bird booklet including full colour photographs and bird call descriptions, Ulva Island history and a walking track map to ensure a great self-guided experience! With its well-maintained tracks the Island offers many easy walking options ranging from 20 minutes to 2 hours, and a chance to enjoy the stunning beaches and sprawling views of Paterson Inlet from the lookout.

Fish & Hike Combo

After enjoying your morning fishing tour, return to Halfmoon Bay/ Oban on foot through the Rakiura National Park, and along the first section of one of New Zealand's 'Great Walks'. With well-formed paths the Port William walk takes approximately 4-6 hrs. Or you may choose to make a night of it and stay in one of the DOC huts along the northwest circuit.

Your hike offers stunning scenery and plenty of local history. Port William was the site of early Maori Villages, sealing and whaling bases and the first police station in 1867. Between 1913 and 1935 the Maori Beach area was a busy settlement with a school and several houses for workers from the Maori Beach Sawmilling Company. The last operating mill on Stewart Island, it closed in 1931. Today the area is peaceful and picturesque, with regenerating forest quickly hiding evidence of those earlier days. However, remains of a boiler and steam engine used by the mill can still be found.

Lunch packs can be arranged for you to enjoy on the beach after your fishing tour, before continuing on your hike.

Day trip packages are available from Invercargill including flights.

It encompasses a network of former nature reserves, scenic reserves, and state forest areas. Although the island lies only 30 kilometres south west of Bluff, between latitudes 46 and 47 degrees south, it could well be in another part of the world.
