Rakiura Charters is a locally owned and operated company, offering premium tours aboard 8.5 metre, custom built Rakiura Suzy. Matt and Alina are relatively new to Stewart Island, but are strongly tied to it with a family history of two generations of fisherman. Matt grew up on the Island, and the family has maintained a strong presence there with a family holiday home and frequent trips to this unique place. Matt has now returned to his childhood playground after 14 years working in nautical tourism in the Abel Tasman National Park. German born, Alina migrated from Australia in 2005, and has a diverse background in Fisheries conservation, wetland habitat management, luxury accommodation and tourism. Rakiura Suzy was custom built in 2007 by Osprey Boats to explore Stewart Island’s many stunning bays in comfort, fitted with toilet, shower, heated enclosed cabin and full galley, sleeping up to three people plus crew with the unique ability to get in to secluded spots. Rakiura Suzy, using purpose-made ‘legs’, also has the ability to rest level on the sea floor in tidal areas and overnight. Built to exceed Maritime New Zealand safety standards through its positive buoyancy design fitted with all safety equipment to comply with safe ship management as well as the latest navigation equipment.
